Situation: Expired H1B Visa Stamp, valid I-797 valid for another two years, needed a new H1B stamp for overseas travel.
Needed a Mexican visa to travel to Tijuana as my H1B visa had expired. Emailed (
[email protected]) to get an appointment. Got an appointment around 7:45 AM and had to bring Passport, a passport photo, original and copy of I-797, bank statement for last 3 months (having 1552.85 USD at the end of each month), application form, 36 USD, proof of appointment at America consulate in Tijuana. The process at the mexican consulate was simple, handed over the documents and they took a photo and was given the passport with the visa in 3 hours or so. The visa was multiple entry and was valid for 6 months.
Arrived at Tijuana airport via Greyhound and was staying in Grand Hotel. Hyatt place is near by Grand hotel and is better than Grand Hotel but a little expensive. The taxi from Airport to Grand Hotel was 250 peso. It should be between 150-200. It seems like one needs to negotiate the taxi price over here. The process of visa is split over two days. First day is to take picture and fingerprint. The next day is the visa interview at the consulate.
Just walked over to the place to get picture and fingerprint (15 min) walk from Grand hotel and 5 min from Hyatt place. It is good enough to be there 15 min before the actual appointment time. The place was empty with just 5 folks, and it just took 5 min and was asked to arrive 20 min before the interview time at the american consulate. They don't folks to carry USB, cell phones and other electronics. I just a wrist watch and that was fine. One guy had a cell phone and he was asked to go back to the hotel and drop it off. Just don't carry electronics including smart watch.
Arrived early for the visa interview and they called out for folks for a certain appointment time. Taxi from Grand hotel was 150 peso. First step was security, went fine. Again, do not bring electronics, just leave it at the hotel. We were asked to go into another building and were given a token number in the first window. This number was called out in next window, the guy checked the passport, name with something on his computer. He also confirmed the type of visa and asked for I-797 and was asked to go a specific window. This was a fingerprint step, was asked to finger print 4 fingers on right hand. We were then asked to wait for the actual visa interview. Handed over the passport, DS-160 confirmation page, I-797 and was asked the usual questions (employee, number of years, reason for visa, designation, pay). In addition, i was asked for a employee letter and i just had an offer letter which was accepted. It probably took 5 minutes and was asked to arrive the next day at 3 PM to collect the passport and other documents ( I-797 ). Stepped out from the consulate and seems like taxis just roam around. They quoted 200 but settled for 150 pesos.
