Parents got visa - Mumbai consulate :-))
My parents got visa on 5/19/2008 - 10yrs multiple from Mumbai consulate.
They had chosen Guajarati interpreter. Their appointment was at 8.30am.
There were 4 couples standing in the queue before my parents. 3 of them got rejected.
Here's how it went (whole conversation was in Guajarati, because the VO himself was an Indian, speaking Guajarati):-

Dad: Good Morning
VO: Good morning

VO: Who is in US?
Dad: My daughter, her family and my son.

VO: What is their status?
Dad: Daughter is a permanent resident and son is on H1B.

VO: How many children do you have in India? (Tricky question - My parents have only 2 kids)
Dad: None. I have 2 children and both of them are in US.

VO: So, if both of your kids are in US, why will you come back to India? You might stay there.
Dad: My dad answered appropriately, showing strong ties.

VO: So how many months visa do you need?
Dad: 1 or 2 months max.

VO: Ok, your visa is approved. You will receive your passport in the mail.

No documents asked.
They received their passport yesterday and it had 10 years multiple visa.

We are so happy. Lesson for all of us –
ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH. AND DON'T BE AFRAID IF BOTH THE KIDS ARE IN USA. BUT JUST TELL THE FACTS.

Parents got visa at Chennai
Hi
First of all , thanks a lot to the Immihelp community. I prepared all documents for my parents per this website and it was very useful in building up confidence that we had all avenues covered.

We were slightly worried since both my sister and myself live in the US.

My parents went to the consulate at 2.30 for their 3.30 appointment and were let in immediately.

We had booked an English appointment but were given the option to interview in Tamil since the line opened up.However my parents decided to stay in the same line.

VO: Good afternoon
Parents: Good afternoon
VO: So, you are a doctor? ( I guess he got this information from the I-156 document)
Dad: Yes. I am a consulting physician and I have practised for X years.
VO: What does your son do in the US?
Dad: My son works as a X in company Y. My daughter works at X. We are having her wedding in September in Chennai ( I am not sure why he gave all this information at once.Maybe there was one followup question about my sister)
VO: Do I get an invitation for the wedding? (joking)
Dad: (mistaking that he wants to see the invitation starts to take it out of his bag)

VO : (smiles) You are approved. Please enjoy your trip.

They mentioned that their case was the quickest and it hardly took 2 minutes. They also mentioned that most of the applicants were parents and there were 4 rejects - mostly women who came there by themselves.

All in all a good experience. So my 2 cents for anyone who is applying for their visa is be confident and tell the truth at all times. Both my sister and me are here and a lot of people advised us not to mention this fact or say that my sister lives in India. I think this kind of advice is dangerous and unnecessary.

All the best!

Torist Visa
Myself & my wife had booked USA tour through renowned tour company in Mumbai by paying hefty advance. They arranged for visa appointment. For the said appointment I spent lot of time preparing complete documents file. We thought that as we have tour company letter & all the relevant documents, the consular officer will give visa easily after seeing the file. But it was not so easy. The consular officer did not bother to look at the file. Obviously booking tour through renowned tour company did not matter at all.
Full interview was totally verbal covering topics like tour itinerary, cost of tour, means of financing, my source of income, investments etc. No papers were asked or seen.
Subsequently my wife was asked questions on her source of income, no. of children, where they stay, what they do? How many grand children & where they stay. I was told not to intervene.
All depends on how fluently & convincingly you reply. Your getting visa totally depends on impression carried by the consular officer about your truthfulness. If you fumble while answering you are in trouble.
So our advise is not to book tour before getting visa & prepare thoroughly for oral interview.

Visitors Visa granted(for my parents) at Mumbai Consulate
All,

First and foremost i would like to thank the immihelp team in guiding me for all the procedure. I had my parents visa booked at Mumbai Consulate on 23rd Apirl 2008 and they were granted 10yrs multiple entry. Here is the summary. My parents had taken an appointment in "Marathi" but unfortunately there was no interpretor. I was awesome from the interview who told that if you know 'Hindi" we can both talk in "Hindi" so finally the interview was conducted in "Hindi". Good that the American knew Hindi

1. Entered the cabin.

Officer: How are you doing?
Dad: I'm doing fine.

Officer: So why you want to go to USA?
Dad: To visit my son & daughter-in law.

Officer: Where does your son stay and on which visa is he in USA?
Dad: He stays in Virginia and is currently on H1B.

Officer: Do you know the name of company and designation he works for?
Dad: Yes! <
Officer: What do you do in India?
Dad: I'm retired.

Officer: What is your income, if you are retired? Show me your property documents?
Dad: Showed him all his India property documents.

Officer to Mom

Officer: Who else stays with you in India. How many children do you have?
Mom: My daughter stays in Mumbai. She is married.

Officer: Will you come back to India?
Mom: Yes

Officer: Abhinandan! You visa is granted.

This is what all it was, my dad/mom are retired they knew english but just to be on safer side they took in native language and it was good that the Interviewer speaks Hindi. We were lucky.
