H1B Visa Renewal - Tijuana
I went to US Consulate Tijuana for my H-1B visa renewal on November 23rd 2009. This is my second time going to that Consulate for visa renewal. For this interview, only visa application form I have complete was DS-160 (and take print out of confirmation page). I carried supporting documents (whatever I can think of) – H-1B approval papers, offer letter, employment letter, paystubs, W2s, Tax filings, previous I-797s, previous visas/passports etc. (Note that there is no formal document list. What documents needed solely depending on your specific case). Because I live in San Diego getting there(Tijuana) was easy for me – I drove to San Ysidro border, parked by vehicle in one of the 24Hour parking, walked across through one-way revolving door, took a yellow cab to Banamex bank(Open:9PM-4PM, near the Consulate), paid visa application fee for me and spouse (US$150.00 per visa application). It was 9:25AM by the time we reached front gate of the Consulate. The security guard asked us to stand in the line (a long line!). There is single line for all the applicants with appointments. When we were standing in the line a person from Consulate office checked our documents (Passport, previous Visa and DS-160 confirmation page). It took more than 1 hour to get inside consulate. Again while entering they check your passport with DS-160 confirmation page and staple a token number (inside window). After the security check we were asked to sit in the waiting area. They allow small number (around 25~35) of people inside to wait again until their token number is displayed to go to room to check documents, take photo & finger prints. We were waiting more than an hour to get this done. After this, again we have to go to waiting area outside until they call us inside. It took another 2 more hours to get to the interview window (again this is going by the token number). By this time my two little kids were exhausted and hungry. The interviewer asked my current I797, about my Company, work, salary, how often I got paid, and paystubs, how long I have been working in US and about my previous employer. She verified my (& spouse) finger prints, cancelled my previous visa and asked me collect our new visa tomorrow at 3PM. We exited Consulate around close to 2PM that day. We stayed overnight at ‘Real Del Rio’, a nice hotel near the Consulate for US$80.00 per day. This Hotel is clean; with courteous staff (every one speaks English) and nice restaurant inside. The next day we went to the Consulate around 2:45PM but asked to wait in the line more than an hour (under the hot sun) to collect our passport (have to show photo ID). Took a taxi to the border and waited for about an hour in I-94 office to get new I-94. At last this ordeal is over and we were back in US around 5:30PM. In my previous visit (8/8/2008) there were separate line for H-1B visa in the front gate, they were giving preference for people with small kids and were returning visa on the same day.
