Please help me - My husband and I were married May 2005. He is from El Salvadore and entered illegaly but has been living here in the united states since 1990, and received a work permit in 1992. His work permit was stolen years ago and we do not know how to find his A number to fill out forms for him to remain with me in the United States. Immigration attorneys want several hundred dollars to assist him in locating his status. What should I do???

When you say he got work permit, what exactly he got? Employment authorization card (EAD)? Sample at http://www.immihelp.com/greencard/sample-employment-authorization-card-ead.html
If he got this, please post more details on what basis he got it.
