Income tax filing help needed

I arrived in US on 14Oct 2005 with my wife and 1 yrs old kid. I am on L1 visa and my wife/kid on L4. We have never travelled to US before for any reason. My wife is housewife here.

I am filing my tax returns for the first time in the US. I contacted IRS helpline and I got conflicting answers from them. I need clarrification w.r.t :

1. Whether or not I should file W7 for getting ITIN no for both of them?
Or only for my wife or its not at all required ?

2. Most of the time IRS says I am not eligible for exemption so does it means
that I need not apply for ITIN no and simply file my returns.

3. There are certain publications for non-resident India, do they apply in my case?

Any assistance in this regards will be very much appreciated.

1 & 2. You can't apply for ITIN number at any time. You will have to apply for both your wife and child when you file your tax returns.

2. Not sure what you mean. Which publications?
