Do we have to get the original passport cancelled before applying for VISA ?

Do we have to get the original passport cancelled ( in my case India ) from the Consulate before my family applies for a VISA to visit India ? or Can that be done together when we apply for VISA ?

Both can be done at the same time. Send your Indian passport alongwith the Indian visa application.
