There is no "success rate"; like I said it all depends on each person's situation. Possible effect on future visits;

There is a usual delay in response to your ext. app. ; it takes a few months.
And in a large no. of cases, the response comes after the I-94 expires.
If response is affirmative, everything is fine. But if it is a denial and your I94 is expired; 222g begins to apply and you are supposed to leave US immediately.
In such a case, when you enter again on the same visa, the officer can
refuse you entry on the basis of 222g (visa void due to overstay) and you
have to convince him by showing the denial letter and your departure date
that you left immediately after you received a denial.

So, if you wish to avoid a possible dispute on future entries, apply for
an extension only if really necessary.

If you leave before the response, 222g does not apply. You will have to ask your contact in US to send the response to you by mail, you may have to show it to the officer in case there is a problem. Also, keep a copy of the I-94 with you.

222g only voids your existing visa. It also requires you to apply only at your home country for another visa. So, it will be fine if you enter on a new(same or different type) visa,
provided you do not overstay more than 180 days on the previous visa.
Overstaying more than 180 days atttacts an entry bar.
