At the PoE my father was given 6-month I-94 where as my mother was given only 3-month I-94. My father handed over both the passports to the officer and he even asked how long they wanna stay and my father replied 6 months(since they have the return tickets by the end of 6th month). He did not ask my mom any questions. Is this a mistake? Is it recommended to apply for an extension since this is their first visit and they have a 10year Multiple visa. I appreciate if someone can help me out. Thank you.

Even if it is a mistake, there is nothing you can do it about it now.

You must apply for extension if she wants to stay beyond 3 months. Read http://www.immihelp.com/visitor-visa-extension/ for details.

Dear Admin,

Thanks for your help I really appreciate that. Is it ok if I apply it right away so that within the next three months I will know the result.

It is better to apply 4 to 6 weeks before the current stay expiration. Don't do it right away otherwise the chances of rejection are higher.
