Extension of visa

Hi,
I am planning to extend my mom's visa . She has a 10 yr multiple entry aND is her 2nd visit . (1st visit she got 6 month visa and left the country in 5 months)

i heard that if we apply for the extensiona and if for some reason, they deny it - the 10 yr visa is cancelled - is it true ?
