Outside US for 8 months

My friend got his GC in 2003 October. He stayed outside US twice (once for 6 months and another time for 8 months). Other than that he has regularly stayed in US.

Because he stayed outside US for 8 months, will he lose his eligibility for citizenship and a fresh five year clock starts again?

Your friend has disrupted continuous residence unless proven otherwise. He might still be eligible to apply for citizenship. Read the instructions (m-476) for detailed information.
