I have sent my N-400 about 10 days back. If everything is ok,the next step is we should receive the receipt number right? Until then we cannot track it.
And how soon do we get the receipt number?

Once your check is cashed you should expect the receipt notice within the week (in some cases you also get the FP notice along with the receipt notice).

Thanks for the reply. I will complete the 5 years by 04/01/2007, so will they wait until that time before sending the notice for receipt/FP. Please clarify.

No.. i applied 4 yrs 10 months and after a week got the receipt notice and 10 a week from then got the FP notice (went for FP, 2 weeks frm the date I got my FP notice)

so does it mean that once the check is cashed, our application is accepted. I mean only after they examine the application thoroughly, do they the cash the check. I was just curious. i could see that yesterday my check was cashed. please clarify. thanks.

Once your check is cashed you should get a receipt notice..They go thro your application to see if its complete and only then they encash your check. I guess you enclosed photocopies of all documents as requested in the application.
