How soon to come back to US to maintain GC

hi.
My parents came here last year June as new immigrants
and left back for India in middle of January.

Now, they have to come back to US again to maintain
GC. My question, how latest can they come to the
US without any problems with the INS at the
port of entry. They want to delay coming
as much as possible due to some personal reasons
but still maintain the immigrant status.

Anybody been through this scenario?? What are
my options???

Coming to the US once in a while is not enough to keep the GC.
They actually have to reside in the US. If they don't, they may already have lost the GC.
The stay abroad has to be temporary in nature.
