What's My Role as a Travel Companion?

I see numerous posts about people looking for 'traveling companions" for relatives going to and from the US. I would like to learn more about this as next month I have some free time on my hands and would be available to do some traveling. I'm sure every situation is different but as a general rule, do travel companions get a one-way or a round-trip ticket for their services? Is the traveling companion compensated in anyway? Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
