Leave to Japan. Can the greencard still be processed?

My friend's H1 visa will expire in a few months and he decided to go back to Japan although he can apply for the visa extention. The company which sponsored his greencard agreed to keep his emplyment status. I think his greencard process is still in early stage. I would like to know if it is possible that his greencard can be processed even though he lives outside the US now.

I'm just starting the process and I asked a lot of questions about being away during the process. The answer for your question is YES, his GC can be processed even though he lives outside the US. By the way, after the I-140 he will go for the consular process since he is not in the US.
