It's easy

What I did was go to the nearest INS office and pick up the extension package, mail it to the service center in your area and get an "extension of status".
Note, the visa on the pass may be expired, but she is in status as long she does not stay over the date stamped on the I-94. Even if she overstayed less than 180 days, she can still apply for a visa at a consulate but not for an extension inside the US

So, if her I-94 is still valid, file ASAP. The date the application was received she continues to be in status, that is the I-94 may be expired, as long as she can produce the Notice of Receipt showing a receipt date prior to the expiration date on the I-94

God Bless

I understand that if one has applied for extension of
visitor's visa (B2), then the person will continue to
be in status even after the expiry of the I-94.

Now, if the person's application for extension
is not approved and the information is sent by INS after
the expiry of I-94, how much time will be given
to the person before he/she has to leave the United States.
