Insulin and other medications for diabetic visitors

My parents are going for visa next week and once they get the visa they might come to US in april. The problem is about medicines. My dad is diabetic patient and when I told him to get all his medicines, he brought the point to the notice that getting insulin and injections is not a good idea and he says he will get the prescription and he will buy it here. We are planning on buying medical isurance anyway.

1. So with indian prescription can he really buy medicines here?
2. Does he have to see a doctor here and get the prescription?
3. Is it really a good idea to buy the insulin and syringes here?

Why is it not a good idea to get from India?

No medical insurance will cover pre-existing conditions and therefore your supplies of insulin etc will NOT be covered by any medical insurance.
