I applied in late August and took FP exactly one month later. When I recently checked my status online, I saw an RFE had been mailed on Sept 3, 2009. I didn't receive anything dated Sep 3 but received the request for FP which was dated Sep 4th. Is RFE the same as Request for FP?

Yes, the status shows as RFE during the FP process. That is what I see too for my application.
