Need some help regarding visitor visa renewal experience in New Delhi US consulate.

My father applied for his visitor visa B2 renewal in Feb. He had a 10 year multiple
entry visa earlier , made a few trips, never overstayed , clean record.

He went through regular interview process >3 weeks back .
Interview went well and the consular officer said, we are approving your visa. Took the passport and documents,

but then handed him a yellow form which has a tick against an option saying that they are sending for administrative processing
under 221(g). When my father asked, they said, they will send in 2-3 weeks and he can check for the status online here :
http://newdelhi.usembassy.gov/nivadminprocnewdelhi.html

Now its been >3 weeks and the passport has not come back.
Both online status report + embassy says case is pending and it may take upto 90 days !!! which is very different from
the consular officer.

The passport has been kept by the US consulate.

Has someone had a similar experience in Indian/ other U.S consulates ? How long is visitor visa B2 renewal taking in recent months? Any way we can expedite this ?

Any advice of our options?

The consulate is free to take as long as it needs to process the visa application.
You have no choice but to be patient and wait.
