Can a person work, if EAD renewal not yet received, but has renewal notice/receipt date & such and original EAD expired, with I 140 approved and I 485 pending >180 days ?

hi i have the same problem. i'm on a j2 until next year and my ead expires june 30. i got the receipt may 23. how can i continue to work?
