Hi
I'm a citizen of India and am currently pursuing my training in General Surgery in the USA. My passport will expire in October 2012 and I plan to apply for a renewal soon. I'm on a J-2 visa with a valid DS-2019, employment authorization document (EAD) and I-94. My US visa had expired in June 2011. Since the J-2 visa is required only for the entry into this country and has to be renewed every year, I did not require renewal of the visa stamp as I had not left US in the last 12 months. I came across an information in the consular website that in the event of expiry of the visa, the passport is issued for a period of 1 year and an extension of validity has to be applied for when the visa is renewed. Will I be reissued a passport for a period of 1 year or 10 years, as I do not have any plans to visit India in the near future till I complete my training in 2014?
Thanks

Short validity passports are no longer issued. You will get 10 years passport.
