I am on L1 and my son is on L2 who is attaining 21st birth day on March 15 2015. He will complete his undergrad by June 2015. His I-94 expires on September 14, 2015. He plans to go back to India by June 2015. Question is whether he is required to change his status to F1 for few months of stay.

Yes. He cannot continue to be on L2 status post his 21st Birthday.
