GC holders - Parents need to extend stay for more than 1 year; what are my options

My parents went to visit India for 4 months and was diagniosed with illness. They have to stay for more than an year now. They did not file reentry permit as we did not know we needed it. Could you please suggest what are my options . Can I file reentry permit while they are in India. Is there a way to notify USICS or US consulate . They intend to return back after treatement is done. Please advice
