Surrender Certificate in NY

Hi,

I applied for PIO for my son and sent $20 for the SC. The application status said that it was put on hold. When I called I was told that I have to send $250 for each parent as we had US passport for 3 yrs without the 'Canceled because of US citizenship' stamp on our Indian passport. Our Indian passport has just 'canceled' stamped on it.

We found no documentation of this any where. We applied on Feb 21. When we try to talk to the out source company they say that we have to talk to consulate. When we call the consulate they say that they no longer deal these and to contact the outsource company. Help Please. Should I pay 500 to get the SC and PIO? Any one else has the same problem?

Sad but true. I have heard alot of cases lately where this is happening. The Consulate did not stamp "Cancelled as holder acquired US citizenship" at the time the passport was cancelled before so how in the world would someone know about this.

I think you would have to pay $500 for both the passports and have this new stamp put on it along with renunciation. Talk with Travisa on how to pay the fine.

Based on the below info published on Travisa Website, we shouldn't be paying $250 given your situation but when called they have asked me to do the same. May be we should seek help from lawyers. This is a rip off.


"5.Important Note for Persons of Indian Origin:
Persons of Indian origin who have already acquired foreign citizenship on or before May 31, 2010 will not be required to pay renunciation fees of $175.00, he/she will be required to pay Miscellaneous fees of $20.00 when having the old Indian passport cancelled/surrendered."
