  • Dependent tax credit

I came USA with my wife and kid in August 2012. I did not filed my kid as dependent in 2012 tax return because my kid didn't in USA more than 6 months in 2012. But we all are here from that time.
My question is can I add my kid as dependent and amend the 2012 return?

I guess it is possible but should be done long time ago. The agency needs update your status for affirmation of citizenship. A ton of people are getting large tax refunds this year.

A tax return amendment can be done up to three years after the final filing date for the particular year.

In your case, however, if the child was not in the U.S. at least 6 months during 2012, it is not a good idea to attempt an additional refund by adding him to your 2012 tax return record.
