I am a PhD student and receive a scholarship from the University (Teacher Assistant). When I started the program, the University offered the F-1 visa and I didn't know about the J1 visa. My wife came with me, and because she can't work with F-2, she found a H1-B sponsor but her application was not selected in the lottery. In order for her to work, we are considering to apply to J visa in our home country, since I am also eligible. Is the fact that she wants to work (but not to support me financially) an acceptable reason for this change? What are the odds of having a denial and lose my current visa?
