ID card or non drivers ID for illegal immigrants.

Hello everyone.
I was on a J1 visa and my program ended 12 months ago so I have overstayed for almost a year now.
I live in Vermont and I know it is one of a couple states in US that allow illegal immigrants to apply for an ID card in a DMV office.
Has anyone done this before? Do you have any advice?
