I have a green card and have met all the residence and physical presence requirements to file my N-400 form. Can I file from outside the US (and return for the FP appointment and interview) or must I be physically present when I mail in the application?

You can apply from anywhere, but your must have proof of physically residing in your USCIS service area for at least three months (if asked at the interviw).
I would recommend, however, that you have your N-400 package mailed from within the U.S.
