  • PIO Card drawbacks !

My son (4 months) old. Born here in US ... recevied his US Passport. Plan is to visit India for 4 months. Myself & spouse on EAD status (H1 & H4 expired)

    1. Should I apply for PIO Card/OCI or VISA is the better option?
    2. What are the drawbacks of applying for PIO card?

    Let me know please.

The main advantage of a visa is you can get it faster (can be same day if you apply in person). That's useful if you need to take the trip in a hurry. Second fastest one currently is PIO (a few weeks), and the slowest is OCI (time is unpredictable and people on the forum have been reporting it took them several months).

    The advantages of PIO/OCI are:
Your son can stay in India indefinitely.
You don't need to keep applying for visas for future trips.
PIO is valid for 15 years, while OCI is for lifetime.
While in India, your son is supposed to be treated equivalently to NRI for financial and educational fields. That might be useful on future trips if you want your son to go to school there.

    Hope this helps,

    Tamtom
