Getting B1 visa for self-employment while in H1

Hello,

I am a H1-visa holder working for a private company as a contractor to their clients. I wanted to know if I get a B1 visa for self-employment and work for myself and be a self-employed contractor? Basically, I want to float myself as a self-employed contractor, i.e., start my own business. Is this possible without having a greencard? If so, how will it affect my legal status in the US?
