  • How to choose the right MBA course?

A Master of Business Administration course is a higher degree level that equips you with crucial corporate management skills. Generally, an MBA program covers both core curriculum and elective units. The core curriculum units offered by most schools include economics, operations management, human resources, marketing, business administration and accounting.

The best aspect of an MBA is that it transverses across multiple disciplines. An MBA does not entail the unilateral goal of teaching business management. You have the choice of specializing in a variety of electives which range from private to public sector management. A prospective student can opt to specialize in e-commerce, entertainment, health care, corporate leadership and technology management.

Climbing the corporate ladder is a common ambition for business professionals. An MBA degree choice is valuable because you attain a distinction over bachelor degree holders. This internationally recognized higher level qualification exposes you to choice opportunities as it augments the value of your resume. Moreover, an MBA course equips you with business proficiency through acquiring critical industry analysis and problem-solving skills. MBA studies prepare you to work across different industries and help you prevail against the mounting competition for boardroom spaces.

The choice you make for an MBA course is mainly determined by the direction you want your career to take. Here are some tips to guide your choice:

    1. Quality of the course
Consider the expertise of the college’s faculty and gauge whether the school offers quality teaching programs. Does the school have the necessary facilities to boost your learning experience? Does the school offer any placement opportunities? What are the teaching methodologies employed at the school and do they suit you?

Some business schools have carved a niche in specific specialized areas such as real estate and health care administration. Remember that the main goal is to pursue professional advancement and personal skills excellence. The true value of an MBA qualification is in developing the skills and capacity you will require in the long run. Earning an MBA from the right business school boosts the value of your resume and accelerates your career.

    2. Accreditation and Ranking of the school
As a prospective MBA student, ensure that the school is a fully accredited business college or university. Accreditation means that the institution can legitimately award recognized degrees in business management. Accreditation in the U.S. is mainly done by the U.S. Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U. S. Department of Education (USDE) who review whether a college’s programs comply with set criteria. Graduate degrees from accredited schools have wide acceptance by employers and protects you by ensuring you obtain prober business management training.

Further, consider the school’s ranking among others. Management education rating systems employ comprehensive criteria in ranking business schools. These include the school’s academic reputation, the opinions of graduates and their salaries after graduation. Currently, the most credible MBA rankings sources include the Financial Times[1], Forbes Top 50 MBA[2] programs, Business Week[3], and the U.S. News & World Report[4]. Choose a school that is reputed for its excellence in business management training and education.

    3. Popularity of the course
Review your goals in choosing to commit to earn the higher-level degree. A good MBA program should advance your professional expertise as well as expose you to greater employment opportunities. Before making a final decision, evaluate the current rate of the course’s acceptance in schools and different industries. Consider the graduate employment rates and the salaries. High enrolments in the course may mean that the course is popular or highly demanded by employers. However, it may also mean that the job market is, or will soon be, saturated with professionals with similar qualifications.

    4. School location and tuition fees
Location is a primary factor when picking the right business school. Ensure that you are comfortable with the area in which the institution is located. Easier access to school is preferable when you want to be closer to your family. You may also be inclined to choose a distant location because of your preferred industry. For instance, where you’re leaning towards investments or finance you can opt for New York, Tokyo or London where financial markets are thriving.

There are several high-ranking accredited business schools but the tuition fees can be quite expensive. Compare the cost of the course in different institutions. Ensure that choosing cheap does not mean compromising on quality. You can also check whether the school offers any financial aid or scholarships and enlist for these reliefs.

The significance of a quality higher level management education continues to increase. As students jostle to fill up enrollment opportunities, it is important to avoid being caught in the frenzy. Be objective and review the goals of your MBA degree choice. Gauge whether your choice will improve your expertise and marketability. Ensure that the school you choose is fully accredited and has a program that suits you.

I would suggest considering if MBA is even worth it, given the high cost. This includes the fact that you are not earning for 2 years. Also, employers other than Technology companies or in Banking or Consulting find a hard time getting a visa for someone with MBA (non-technical degree)
