I had filed for divorce in USA as I am citizen and lived here and my husband for 24 years. His family in India are big shot lawyers and harassed me through cases from India to bring the case to India. My brother was charged for forgery fraudulently for getting their income tax returns. He was jailed. Under duress, I had to sign a settlement to not get anything really, just a small amount from all our savings, and then they let my brother have bail. one of the conditions was for me to file from India for divorce instead as a mutual consent. I am so ready for this to be over as this has become so ugly. My question is do I have to go to India to file the petition or can I give someone power of attorney? Or do have to go to file petition and also to finalize? Please advise.
