I-94 ends before petition expiration date

Hi.,

I just realized that I have my I-94 ending March 02, 2016 while my petition (I-797A) has the ending date as August 2018

I was under the impression that I-797 Notice of Action was a replacement for I-94. But I could not find any source on the internet to confirm the same.

Any of you had a similar issue? If I need to correct the I-94, I understand one way is to get out of the country and return. The Port of Entry would correct it.
But, I do not have any travel plans soon.

Is there a need to correct the I-94 validation date? If yes, Is there any other way of correcting the I-94 validity date?
I see I-539 as an answer given in one of the forums, but then it is for visa extension.

I am confused. Can anyone throw some light on this
