Hello!
I am a citizen of a northern European country and have lived in the US for 9 years (high school, undergrad) and initially came here on a J-1 visa as an exchange student for one year. I then switched to a F-1 visa and have stayed on that since.
I am going to Canada next year to start my PhD studies - however I would really like to return to the US for postdoc positions in a few years once I have completed my studies in Canada.
I have heard from someone that I cannot apply for a J-1 again for a second time if I have already had one granted previously. Is this true? The 2-year home residency rule did not apply to me back when I was an exchange student since I was not funded by any government and my country does not have any additional requirements, so that is not an issue.
Would I still be able to apply for a J-1 when the time comes in a few years?
Thanks! hope to hear back from someone who knows more about this.
