  • Insurance Information Needed Please

    Hello,
I am a US citizen and petitioning for my Mom who is 78yo to live with me in California. She take 3 medications (high blood pressure, cholesterol...) My questions are:

    1. You are saying can't receive MediCal until she has been a green card holder for 5 years?

    2. Is her best choice for health coverage a Visitor Medical Insurance?

    3. If so does this cover her 3 monthly medications?

    4. Does a heart attack or stroke count as acute-onset-of-pre-existing-conditions since she is already taking high blood pressure, cholesterol medication?
If so does any plan cover this?

    Thank you

No. In California and several other states, there is no 5 year waiting period for Medicaid (California's is called Medi-Cal) for new permanent residents.

No. She is not a visitor. If she doesn't qualify for Medi-Cal, she should buy a regular health insurance plan. She can buy it through the state's Obamacare exchange (California's is called Covered California) or she can buy it directly from a company.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

        That's not true.

        1. You can Medi-Cal office and find out yourself.

        2. CA state does NOT allow new immigrants 65 years and above to enroll under Obama Care plan for. In any case, try to get her enrolled into Obamacare or into any domestic plans if possible. If that does not work, then try https://www.insubuy.com/new-immigrant-insurance/ as the last resort.

Thanks I saw your responses earlier and I actually read those before posting I was just trying to clarify with I guess more yes or no replies.

          A. I'll double check like you said on the Medi-Cal that she has to be here for 5 years first.
          B. If that's true and CA state does NOT allow new immigrants 65 years and above to enroll under Obama Care she is screwed. But you said apply anyway?

Reason being like you said in your first response New Immigrant Insurance doesn't cover medications. She has 3. The pre-existing-conditions area seems so gray. Meaning she takes blood pressure pills and cholesterol never had a heart attack but if she did I would imagine not covered.

We answered to your original questions to the best of our knowledge.

However, another poster replied to dispute those facts.

Therefore, we replied that you can try yourself applying to Medi-Cal, MediCaid, Medicare, or Obamacare and so on.

If none of that works, try our new immigrants health insurance plans. Those would be the last resort: Something is better than nothing. They would not cover your mother's ongoing medications. Whether a heart attack would be covered or not depends upon the attending physician statement and no one can say Yes or No in advance.

I hope that answers your questions.

Medicaid and Medicare are different. Medicaid is for low income people of any age. Medicare is for old people.

Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid) definitely has no waiting period for new immigrants; any permanent resident whose income is low enough qualifies, regardless of how long they have been a permanent resident.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

We get calls regularly from customers who had Medi-CAL for new immigrant and it got cancelled based on the sponsor income.

Please note that if you sponsored someone, your income is considered their income until they become US citizen or work for 10 years.

Therefore, her income would be higher than what a person would qualify for Medicaid/Medi-Cal.
                Thanks & Regards
