My country (the UK) isn't on the J1 skills list. However I am being offered a short term scholar position by a state university in the US, on which I would be paid upwards of 100k a year.
My questions are as follows:
- Since the university is a state university, is the 2 year rule still applicable, since the short term payments are provided by a government body?
- How long could I work on the J1 visa?
- Could I later convert to the H-1B visa category?
- Is there a payment cap on how much a J1 holder could earn? Would the immigration officer at the embassy in London have any issue with someone earning a high salary on the J1?
- Am I better off getting an H-1B instead since this position is possibly for over a year ( ~ 14 months)?
