  • N-400 applic for family and children

Hi, we have had a green card for the last 5 years and are in the process of applying for citizenship. We have 2 underage children (ages 12 and 9). Do we need to complete N-400 forms for each of them?
I am confused because the first question states that if they are not 18-years old, they cannot apply.

    I appreciate any help.
    Regards,
    Marcelo

    Minors cannot apply for naturalization.

However, under INA 320, a permanent resident under 18 living in the US with a US citizen parent automatically and involuntarily (without any action) becomes a US citizen. That means if you become a citizen (i.e. take the oath) before they turn 18, they will on that day automatically become US citizens. After they become US citizens, you can apply for US passports for them without needing to apply for anything else first (you could also apply for a Certificate of Citizenship for them if you want, but that costs more than a thousand dollars and doesn't really serve any purpose that a passport doesn't).

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
