ECNR for an F1 Applicant

Dear Friends,

Could you please tell me if ECNR Stamp is really required for an F1 Visa holder? I had taken my Passport when I was doing my graduation hence ECNR was not stamped. Now I have applied for F1 Visa, Should I still go and get ECNR Stamped?

I have gone through your ECNR link in this site. It is really helpful in preparing one self for ECNR stamping.. My question is, if atall ENCR stamping is necessary or better, Will it take time for getting it done or is it a days job..? ( I hold the old manual format passport taken in 2000)

Please reply soon, since I am in my home town now and can go ahead with the process if at all required.

ECNR is not required for USA.
