Extension of visa

I'm a student from Belarus who is now in the USA on my J-1 visa (International exchange), and i'd like to change my visa status into B-2 (Tourist visa). I found info about all documents needed, but i still have some question. Would you be so kind as to provide me with answers.

What documents are needed for proof of financial support? If it is a bank account how much money should be presented? (i'm planning to apply for 4 month, than i'd like to enter collede here)

If I'm a student in my native country, should I send any documents verifying my status as a student?
