An EAD allows you to work for any employer, be self-employed, etc. Period.
What you refer to is the issue with the underlying I-485 for employment-based GC cases. While the EAD allows to work for any employer, somebody with a pending employment-based I-485 has to continue to work for the sponsoring employer. The person could of course use the EAD to work for somebody else in addition.

    Default EAD with family-based petition

My EAD approval notice came yesterday (yea!). I had submitted my family-based petition (married a U.S. citizen) on Sep 3rd at the DC office (Arlington). Currently, I am working on a H1B visa but would like to change jobs, and maybe even get two!

Is it true that the family-based EAD allows me to work for any company, be it on contract basis, full-time, or part-time? In other words, can I cancel my H1 with my current employer and look for other positions? The reason I'm asking is because for employment-based EAD, the person has to work for the sponsoring employer, correct?

    Thanks for helping me out!
