Change F1 to B1 visa

Hi
I wanna know if its possible to change my F1 visa to a B1 temporarily , I am studying in a Kaplan center in Houston, but I have been invited to participate in a volunteer (unpaid of course) program in a rural area in USA for 3 months, and i know that I cant do it with my F1, I mean I want to make a break in my kaplan course for 3 months, before i start the second part of my course cause i really want to do it, and then continue with the second part of my course at kaplan, cause I ve already paid for that ...Is it possible to do that?, do i have to aply for the change for visa status here in the us? or I have to go back to my country to aply for there?

Be careful. You can not expect to change from F1 to B1 and then to F1 again. Consult an attorney.
