Default EU and Non-EU moving to Spain

My boyfriend and I have been dating for close to 4 years and living together for 2. On some websites, we found information that it would be possible for me to piggyback off his EU citizenship and that I would be able to move with him to Spain using his EU citizenship. On one website it said that in order to do this we would need to prove that we have been living together for 2 years, and some websites have not mentioned this. The Spanish consulate in Chicago seemed to believe that it was not possible for me to take advantage of his EU citizenship, and said that I would have to apply for a work permit and Visa as a Non-EU citizen. There has been a lot of ambiguity surrounding the answer to this question, and we are eagerly awaiting buying our tickets until we resolve this matter. Can you tell me if there is any truth to the fact that I could move to pain with him and not have to apply for a Visa in the US, and if so, do we need to prove that we have lived together for 2 years? I just need some clarification before we plan this huge move.

    Thank you

I looked at the link that you sent me, but I am not inquiring about a spouse, I am inquiring about a boyfriend. We are only dating, and are not engaged or married, but he is an EU citizen and I am not. I was wondering what the law was about long-term significant others.

There is no meaning in law for boyfriend, dating etc.

Institution of marriage was made in this world for various good reasons. Until you get married, you can't really get any immigration benefits.
