Default Lost passport with US visa

    Hi folks:
I m writing about a terrible mess i m in. I m a medical resident in US on H1b visa. I sent my passport for verification of my credentials in an organistion and they lost my passport. I have my original I797 and I94 but my passport along with the stamped visa is lost. What should i do to proceed with the case. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

You need to file a police report immediately first. Apply for a new passport with the Indian Consulate. Do you have copies of all pages of your previous passport?. You would need a police report to file for a new passport.

I hope you have a photocopy of your visa. I guess you will need to get a new stamping done once you have the new passport.

You are fine as long as you are in US. A valid I-94 is proof of your legal status. Make multiple copies of it and keep them separately, in case it gets lost too.

If you travel outside US, you will need an H-1 stamp to reenter. Like Viksvivek
said, get a new passport from the Indian consulate/embassy ; visit the website to see what are the requirements. You can visit canada to get a
new H-1 stamp , it will not be a problem.

Thanks vivek and peace. I have copies of my visa and certainly i would make more copies of I94. I have filed for a police report. Do i need to inform Border control/State department or Consulate in india of my lost passport. Wat if some one misuses my visa. kindly advise.
