Multiple entry schengen visa problem

Firstly,does the multiple entry schengen visa require a confirmed hotel reservation??
I actually want to visit my friend in France,but without her knowledge,on the occassion of her marriage anniversary and then I will be staying at her place for a couple of days. Do I need to show proof of stay??
I will be applying for a multiple entry schengen visa at the NYC,USA french consulate.

May be a good idea to have a reservation just in support of your travel plan.

Would she appreciate someone showing up on their marriage anniversary is a different story.

Your situation is tricky. You can take a chance by not showing arranged accomodations. Thinking practically, if the friend goes on a vacation for the marriage anniversary and you show up trying to surprise her, you are toast and you better have some back up plans.

You can ask your travel agent or American Express travel to book a hotel for you and send the confirmation.

If your plans change later on but before the time line for hotel cancellation, you can do so without any expense.

Just another quick question - If I cancel hotel reservations after I get the visa stamp, will that reflect on my records and will there be a chance of my visa being rejected/cancelled??

As long as you don't have intent to violate the visa terms, you will be fine.
