Hi. I am a student from Norway and I have a question, what to do?

My school has renewed my I-20 for the next year.

My current VISA in my passport expires APRIL 7th 2009. (Was for 1 year).

I am staying with the same school (moving cities and doing internship not paid).

Can I file for the I-539 even if it is less than 30 days til my VISA expires? (My school told me I cannot).

Can I go outside the US (Mexico, Bahamas) and get back in and update the system like that?

Or do I have to go back to Norway and get a new VISA in my passport?

Please help me with this as it is really frustrating and unclear.

    Thank you

Does your I-94 say D/S or does it have a date? You are allowed to stay in the US only until the I-94 date. If it is D/S then you have to maintain status by enrolling full time in school and keeping your I-20 up to date. Visa expiration is immaterial, unless you want to travel outside and return.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

The I-94 has the same expiration date as my old I-20 and the VISA in my passport.
