B1 to J1 research

Hi,

My Visa history till now:

I got F1 in 2007, but i returned back to India in 10 days without attending 1 month course in university
I applied for B2 visitor visa in 2008. I was questioned many times regarding F1 visa during visa interview & at port of entry.

But i got 10 yr multiple entry B2 visa
At port of entry they gave me 3 month stay.
After 2 month in US, i got research in US hospital, so i applied for visa extension.
Fortunately i got 3 month of extension

I came back to India within that extension period

Now i got Research reappointment letter from that research proffesor.
They are offering me both B2 and J1 visa (i have to choose one of them)

Now my question is:

(a) Is this safe to go for J1 research visa (after reading my history)
(b) If i apply for J1 visa and i am rejected, will my 10 yr multiple entry B2 visa also end.

If during Visa interview my J1 is rejected,
Will i be able to enter US on my 10 yr multiple entry visitor visa
