I'm waiting for my interview letter but still not ready to settle down in USA. I need extension on re- entry permit. We need to stay in USA till physical green card arrives thereafter we can apply for extension.Accordingly we can plan leave from school and current job.
I POE'd on March 8 (not Feb 26) and received the GC about May 1.

You're right about the SS# and GC info. The GC took 2 months to arrive because we didn't pay the immigrant fee before we arrived, then USCIS told us to wait until they told us what to do after we paid the immigrant fee.

What some people do is enter the US and apply for a re-entry permit while waiting for the GC to arrive.

What some people do also is enter the US, get that stamp in the passport then go back home before the GC comes in the mail. What happens next is the GC holder gets someone trustworthy to physically bring the card back to them in their home country so they can re-enter the US. What you need to find out is if a LPR has to apply for a re-entry permit inside the US or if you can do it in any country. So that's something to think about or you can pay the immigrant fee, enter the US, apply for your SS#'s & re-entry permits then sit & wait for everything to arrive/be approved.

Oh yeah research follow to join benefits and see if it can help you.

Glad to see you here again dsz. Do inform us once you receive your I/L. Are you the principal or derivative beneficiary ? My kids are also still in school so we have the same concern.

I can guarantee that you won't get that expedite.
Expedites are usually granted to directly benefit the USC and this is further limited to spouses. Examples include a USC that's experiencing a very difficult pregnancy, USCs that are very sick, if a USC spous's life is in grave danger, miltary USCs that are about to be deployed or government officials. And in the case of family petitions, expedites are given only IF visas are available and visas aren't available right now.

          Dear Mtouch,

I'm principal beneficiary.I'm expecting interview call in July...
We already paid $ 400/-. Do we require to pay $ 165/- as immigration fees?

Yes I think so. It's a new fee that has to be paid... better to do so before leaving your country to avoid delay in releasing GC & SSN. I wish all Sept 2002 will get I/L for July. Keep us updated on your case.

Yes you will have to pay it. Me and my father paid the $400 in 2010 and had to pay the $165 in April 2013 because we missed the Feb 1, 2013 deadline to be approved at the embassy.

                If
                Puddy's child:
                In 2014 will be 21

Just to be clear the immigrant fee has nothing to do with the SS#. So you can avoid paying the $165 for 1 year and still apply and receive your SS#.

Yes you can get a SS# without a GC. To get a SS# the most important thing is you need to show is legal presence and permission to work. Re-read my review on applying for the SS#, the info is there.

The stamp (I-551) you get at the airport is your temporary green card until you get the plastic one. You can use that stamp as proof of legal residence and that the US government gave you permission to work. So you can use the stamp to prove legal residence so you can get a job. The stamp expires after 1 year. You can even travel in and out of the US with just that stamp in your passport.

You can because it's not the card that makes you a LPR. The card itself only has your birth date, name, sex, expiration date, issued date, the type of visa you came in on and your Alien number. Most of the things I just listed (except the issue & expiration date) are on the visa or is included in the stamp. So the minute you step foot in the US you can apply for the permit. It looks like it's expensive to file.

Although there is an alternative way of humanitarian reinstatement, but I do not know how difficult to apply for this reinstatement. What is the best reasons to apply that. Yes I have 4 brothers in laws and 1 sister in laws, probably they can be an alternative sponsor, but what is the family ties that I should say in the application. Should I use a lawer to help filing for humantitarian reinstatement?.

Not bad in the sense that work is plenty where I am (NY) but I'm a bit picky so no luck yet.

Life is pretty much the same, I don't go outside unless I have to.
