Urgent - Travel while opt pending

Hi

I have graduated this fall semester , but i havnt received my EAD yet.I have applied for opt , and given start date as jan 27. Now due to a family emergency i want to travel to india. Can i do so? anybody had such an experience?

is it that if u travel while opt application is pending, the application will be abandoned?
