No Surname on the passport

Hi All,

My father writes his name as "Vijai Shanker" and his passport shows "Vijai Shanker" as his First name and the surname field is left empty.

Now, if i put the same info in the form DS 160, it does not accept it as Surname is a Mandatory field in the form.

What shall i do? Shall i mention Shanker as his surname ? Will that be a problem as it would mis-match with what is there on the passport.

by the way, I'm applying for his tourist visa.

Please suggest!
