Credit rating effect on F-1 visa

Hi I have a question regarding my credit history, coming to details I went to New Zealand from India on a student visa and finished my post graduation and now I want to apply for F-1 to USA and continue my studies, when I was in NZ I took an membership in a social organization and they with out informing me charged me 500$ fee which I refused to pay and later they gave the case to credit recovery agency, I finished my education and now I am in India, I recently got an email stating that I need to pay otherwise it will reflect in my credit rating in the public database, I tried to convince them that I was charged illegally but they are bound to alter my credit rating, my question is will this any way affect my F-1 visa that I am going to apply???
