Surrender of Indian Passport

Dear sir/madam

I am kindly requesting some information about surrendering of our old Indian passport. I am a US citizen from 1996. When I received my American passport immediately my Indian passport validation was canceled and now I am hearing from people that we can not keep the expired Indian passport with us and we have to surrender it to the authorities. So can you please be kind enough to explain me exactly the right procedure to follow up.
